TSA has protocols for verifying one's identity without identification. However, they probably would have taken things like credit cards, work ID, costco card, business cards, etc.
Also, it is often smaller stations which are greater sticklers for the letter of the law, even though their interpretation of said laws might be incorrect. Although I have had similar experiences in larger stations (ORD, LAX, EWR), also.
In any case, your expired and clipped ID should have been fine, and I'm sure it would have been accepted at MSP, but you should be able to show anything with your name on it. As long as you have multiple things and they all agree, you should be fine.
