One time going direct ORD - SFO my bag took an earlier flight despite no connection.
It's kind of annoying to stand there waiting for all of them to come out before realising it's in the holding pen and I could have been on my way 25 minutes earlier.

I'm usually too nervous about losing my bag to do that if I've checked one. Do you tell somebody to take it to the luggage office directly, or does it just happen 'organically' when a bag circulates on the conveyor for an hour?
