I've only had my bag arrive at my destination before me once. After the bag didn't show up on the carrousel, I went to the baggage office and was told "Oh your bag arrived on the previous flight" to which I replied "Why didn't somebody tell me, I could have switched to that flight instead of having a 6 hour layover in EWR!".
