Design of B/C concourses at CLT reflects the desires of PI whose fleet was mainly smallish 732s. Post-PI, CLT management has focused on capacity increases (runways, D/E gates) not aesthetics or people flows, except that they did install the moving walkways between B/C and D/E. Overall CLT is definitely showing its age, particularly in landside check-in and the CBP secured area.

ATL had carpet when it opened in 1980, and I think some parts of DFW had carpet when it opened in 1974. It was the trend. CLT is late with a tile retrofit, but better late then never.

There has been high political drama between the city and the state legislature for several years about who's actually in charge of the airport. It's been difficult to get anything done during this time.

As for the situation at the former RDU terminal C, the contract terms made AA responsible for upkeep... which AA had absolutely no interest in spending money on, after they canned the hub. Fortunately the replacement terminal is a vast improvement.
