It is a serious issue. Unfortunately it's also not that uncommon, and not limited to P&W.

Toward the end of 2000 the FAA did a similar thing for GE CF6 engines after some reported problems with those - like one exploding on a Brussels bound CO DC10 on a take off role at EWR.
