If you are a PRC citizen (as evidenced by obtaining an HKSAR passport), then you must use the HK passport or HKID to enter, even if you are permitted to have another (unrecognized by PRC) citizenship.
As a foreign citizen with HK PID, you can enter HK with your passport. If you left your ID in another country by mistake, then you must carry your passport with you instead.
I once forgot my HKID on a visit to HK and had no problem, just told the official my ID number. A friend also packed their ID in their checked luggage and entered with passport without incident.
However we are not PRC citizens (though we both have ***) hence our non-HK passports are recognized by HK.
