Just an update--after scouring like 7 Walmarts in NJ...none of which had an operating money center I marched my way over to good ol' USPS and got myself two $500 money orders.

Unfortunately the teller wasn't able to figure out how to make 1 $1000 money order, split tender $500 each, plus paying $1.65 in cash. I ended up having to pay $2.50 cash for 2 $500 MOs. Better than 3% with Venmo, I guess.
