I chose SPG because I love the starwood portfolio and I believe the points are more valuable as I find flight deals easier to find than hotel deals.
I could've went back to the AMEX Gold but I thought I'd try as different product.
Thoughts?
It's a great point system. The best we have in CAnada, in my opinion. Not only are SPG points more valuable for stuff like airline transfers, they're more valuable now because of the terrible CAD to USD exchange rate. you're acquiring SPG points at 1 per $1, whereas it costs a U.S. cardholder CAD$1.30 per SPG points.
I find the opposite, for the most part, on flight vs. hotel deals. I convert my SPG points to airlines (like AA, SQ) for some good J or F redemptions. And then I get my hotels at pretty deals on hotels.com or whatever. If, however, you are looking at economy flights (might as well pay cash rather than points) and travel during peak periods (where hotel $$$ goes up, but points stay roughly the same) then I agree.
I put all the spending I can on my SPG card. That way I have the option to do both (flight or hotel). So far, it's been flight.
