There are only a few people in the country who splice these types of cables. One of them happens to live in my hometown in Wyoming and he posted a picture of the repair on Facebook with this: "Detroit airport. Emergency repair on the tram system. Splicing in a new section to remove the damage....The air baffles that the tram floats on did not inflate, but the sensors indicted that they were. So the tram launched out and the rope was too low, burning through the sheaves. It got so hot that it melted the center core." He also posted a video of the test run with the new splice a few hours ago so that sounds promising.
