The added overhead space is good news ... as long as pax are not charged to use it. In truth, I cannot see AS stooping to that level ... at least for elite-level folks. I'm wondering about non-status/non-Club 49/non-qualifying credit card-holder fliers who pay to check a bag now would be assessed a similar fee to load a piece of luggage into the new overhead bins. Logistics of rolling this out might be so cumbersome that it would never happen.
