Steve, you have mail. Lindsy, no I'm not actually. I am talking about the Garibaldi which is actually in Sottomarina (di Chioggia). If you love fish, do go. Nelson Meneghello and his mother cook up a storm. His wife Bruna (I bet lots of people had siad "AH HA" when they heard about the Son/Mum team!). Touristy it is not. Thanks for the suggestions for Venice. Have you tried the Tratorria della Madonna near the Rialto? Not fancy, but excellent fish. Evening are better when the lure of the tourist buck goes.
I'm off to Chioggia to stay at the Hotel Bristol on July 19th (no chance of you being in the vicinity I suppose?). Get a load of this. Go round trip from Stanstead £60. No miles, but I could care less at that fare.
The one place that I shall never bother with again was Harry's Bar. Over-rated, over priced, over crowded, and the only Italians were serving. How that dump got 2 rosettes in the Michelin beats me.
What were the others on Patricia Well's list? I have to say that I respect her immenseley. I only know her books on Paris which are 100% accurate, and the Maitres and Chefs do adore her. I once speid her in a tiny bistrot in Paris that she had recommended which is how we got there in the first place. I would loved to have thanked her, but did not wish to intrude.
