Also, keep in mind that United plus Continental does not equal United plus Continental. When each with its own carrier, there were more flights with more seats with A lower pool of elites vying for upgrades.
Before, there may have been a combined 15 flights a day between Chicago and Newark. The combined system has more seats than each individual carrier had before. But there is a net loss altogether.
