I just found something interesting other YVR people might find useful.

I booked YVR-YYC-FRA in U (instead of stopping in YYZ or YUL).
Upgrading YVR-FRA from U is 20 eups.
Upgrading YYC-FRA is 16.
Upgrading YVR-YYC is 2.

So I can upgrade both segments for 18 (2 off the normal) or take the short hop in Y and save 4 eups (which I did).

I had planned to use 20 so it was nice to dave the 4 precious eups for later.
