I'm going to Tokyo in January and this thread made me consider doing a quick trip back to my old stomping grounds (Toyama-ken). While the new shinkansen is fast, it isn't cheap. Tokyo to Toyama is 12,730 yen each way. I'm not getting a JR pass so I think I'll skip the trip this time even though it would be super natsukashii I'm sure.
