It's part of an overall switch in strategy at CX. Plus Qatar and Doha are much more in line with the CX business model and passenger expectations. Even a 1-2 hour Cathay flight in regional business class on Cathay outpaces CW by miles in everything but the flat bed.
I have clients that it really angers and appalls to arrive into LHR with expectations of a business seat with at least some more leg room and personal/attentive service to be put on an A320 in CE.
I think taking the extra leg room out of CE was the last straw for a code/share agreement between CX and BA. Meanwhile QR has upgraded its HK A330 flight from older slanted to new fully flat bed to keep
it in line with CX's offering.
I'm doing HKG-DOH-GVA in feb, first time on a QR single aisle. Grabbed the last two seats the Friday before Chinese New Year. Will be interesting to see if the service is still up to standard on the smaller planes they are going to use for these routes
