About a year ago, I stayed with my wife and daughter at a Hilton in VA that was undergoing lobby renovations. They had us on the third floor, and had hammering/drilling noises coming up into our room (we were above the coffee shop they were renovating at the time).

I mentioned the noise issue, and we were moved to a room on a higher floor; used a bellman since we had a huge amount of stuff with us, and I tipped him $20. The next day, when I asked if they could knock $20 off my bill to cover the tip, it was like pulling teeth. FDC initially refused ('management won't let us knock anything off a room rate'); when I said 'okay, then I'll write to corporate to complain' she offered to knock $20 off my parking fee.
