And I was hoping to utilize my 12 hours layover in Kunming. I was thinking of getting my passport stamped in sanghai which would help me get out of the Kunming terminal.
But I came to know from another person that getting my passport stamped in sanghai will not help me get out of the Kunming airport terminal.
And since my first stopover in China will be shanghai so in Kunming I won't be eligible for a twov stamp. So I will have to stay inside the terminal for 12 hours.
I m taking your opinion regarding this matter. What do you guys think?
You are eligible for a Transit Without Visa, just the 24-hour limit applies since you have 2 stops (PVG + KMG). You will get this from Immigration when you deplane in Shanghai. Probably won't have time to leave the airport at PVG but can certainly roam around it. The Shanghai to Kunming leg will be domestic so once you deplane in Kunming, you are free to go leave the airport and sightsee during your 12 hours. The TWOV stamp will still be good since the 24-hour stamp covers airports in all of China not just the first city's airport--so this "other person's" advice is incorrect. You will return to KMG and pass through Exit Immigration where you'll be stamped out on your way to your international departure.
All you need to do is contact your airline to determine how it/they will handle your luggage at the Chinese airports (they pass through vs you pick up and recheck), and figure out what you want to see and do in Kunming.
