Unaccompanied/Excess Baggage

Hi,

I need some advice. My relative is travelling to India out of JFK this Tuesday.

She is going to LHR on Virgin, and then connecting onto LHR-Dubai-Bombay on Emirates. She will be checking in all the way through to Bombay, at JFK at the Virgin counter. All flights are in economy class.

She is allowed two pieces of luggage each weighing upto 70lbs (32KG) (approx). In case her bags are overweight, does anyone know:

a)What the approximate charges are for overweight luggage from JFK-Bombay, India?. Is it charged per bag or per pound/kilo?

b)Are there any ways to minimize the overweight charges, (apart from removing items from the luggage?)

c)Is it cheaper/better/possible to lighten her current luggage into a third piece of luggage and send it as unaccompanied baggage?. Anyone have experience with sending unaccompanied baggage internationally?, charges, which airline?, when can it be done, e.g day of flight while check in, before flight, and does it have to be on the same airline as the passenger is travelling?

I look forward to any advice that you may have. Thank You Very Much.

Very gratefully,
Rajesh.
