In order to protect myself, I'm wondering if there will be some sympathetic DM agent who will be able to help me change the first segment to an earlier flight. Alternatively, could I simply do a SDC on an earlier flight at check in since I'm in J? (In the past, a DM agent was able to do this for me even though I was going international and hadn't flown those segments yet.) I think the MCT is 2 hrs for a DL to AF flight at JFK, so a change by even one minute should allow me to make a change, right?

(Because the price of the ticket has considerably gone up, I can't make any changes without incurring additional costs.)

Thanks, FTers!
Two hours will be tight. However with the flights not being till next summer, I wouldn't worry about changing the flights now. Wait till a couple months before travel when schedules are set to work on seeing about changing flights. DL changes their schedules so often I'd bet you'll have one that qualifies for a free change.

As for SDC, you're not allowed to use it when you have international flights left to fly. However an agent may go ahead and allow it for an earlier flight that doesn't involve a routing change. (I've had DL SDC me to an earlier LHR flight out of JFK even, the main thing is to ask nicely, and I usually try to make it seem like I'm helping them out - ie I usually close the request by pointing out it's one less person on a later flight to worry about)
