The neighborhood around Madison Square Garden is OK, but dreary. Dig a little deeper and stay in a Broadway hotel in the 40s, e.g. Marriott Marquis, Crowne Plaza, Novatel, etc. You'll be in the midst of the action, yet only 10-15 short blocks from Madison Square Garden. You'll thank me.
