Almost all of the major HK hotels jack you for toll free calls (e.g. to AT&T or MCI) to the tune of 35 or 40 HKD. Local calls there are typically a more reasonable 5 HKD.
I've found that hotels in India have similar, but much less transparent, policies. Several years ago, I spent a full two hours arguing with the manager of the Sheraton in Agra over a $100US!!! bill for less than an hour of local and in-country long distance calls. I ended up giving him $10 and agreeing that I would never set foot
in his hotel again. I would have paid him a bit more were it not for his mortifying generalizations about Americans' lack of class.
Sorry to be tangential. I suppose the moral to my story is two-fold: 1) beware of hotels that don't publish their rates and, 2) don't be afraid to negotiate in extreme circumstances.
