Some pursers will make sure that DMs in D1 get their choice of meal.

Even if not on the same PNR, you can call and ask for a free C+ seat for one companion.

I think there have been mixed reports about using GUCs/RUCs for a traveling companion on the same flights but not the same PNR. Examples would include one ticket for a business traveller being booked (in either business class or coach) through a corporate travel agency with a SO using a ticket purchased separately.
