Anyone have experience with booking an international flight, then going there, not wanting to return and getting credit for the return portion of it?

The reason I ask is looking at flights to Europe. There and back return ticket is 2000 (Leave Nov 30, Return Dec 20). To book it as 2 individual one way tickets is like $5000.

Is there a built in concept whereby a return ticket as a package costs less then 2 individual one ways? What is Air Canada's approach to credit for the return...?
