I was just asked by a flight attendant (in the most wonderful and polite way) to cease my (mind you, very quiet) Facetime chat with a friend... I was using audio only over wifi.

The reason was NOT volume obviously... but (according to the flight attendant) the fact that audio calls over wifi are not allowed on AA wifi... She said she even checked with the pilot...according to the flight attendant. A quick search brought me to the following: http://roadwarriorvoices.com/2015/05...ring-a-flight/

I'm naive... please inform me why (like actually WHY) I can not...should not use voice over wifi on an airplane?

Completely genuine question here... I have no idea why voice calls are restricted via wifi... just want to know...

Thanks!

Setting the bandwidth issue aside, I'd say it's a knee-jerk reaction thinking they won't be able to tell the difference between VoIP and Cellular Voice with the concern over cellular RFI (Yes, there are reports that say it's safe, but there are still issues with numbers). A majority of users have no clue how their devices work trying to explain the difference of WiFi and cellular data will (and should) be beyond the scope of FAs let alone users. Yes, they are taking the easy way out, but I don't blame them.

I love seeing more and more businesses posting signs to be off your cell phone when placing an order or step out of line. Besides being plain inconsiderate of the business and others in line, it leads to miscommunication (on both sides) and the customer will expect the business to correct the problem.

Remember the days when if you saw someone apparently talking to themselves was a clear sign to avoid them? IT STILL IS!!! hehehe
