I think this is just a case of AC might have been a bit early and someone familiar with typical flying patterns just ignored all the signs that "strangers" to the area might see.

I have flown out of YYJ (as recently as two weeks ago) many times and there aren't that many flights leaving from the AC gate so you notice the absence of passengers once the flight has boarded.

We can all get distracted, assume things that aren't so, etc. I would just chalk it up to one of those and I am sure Nitehawk won't find himself in that situation at YYJ again^
I've flown YYJ-YVR quite a few times, and one thing I've noticed is that some flights are 100% full, and others are 10% full.

So I'm not sure that not seeing anyone around would make me think "gee I've missed it".
