Considering Flying Turkish Airlines for 1st Time

Lots of good advice reading through these forums. I'm looking to book a trip, SFO to Europe through IST but had a question I can't find anything on here.

My wife and I would be flying economy and we had a friend recently fly on Turkish airlines who said it was by far the hottest flight she's even been on. Heat was turned on for 9 hours and passengers were sweating. I'm wondering if this is common and something to be concerned about as getting on a 13hr flight with a heated cabin sounds dreadful.

And from what I've read here a 1.5-2 hr layover should be plenty time to not worry about checked baggage to make it to our next flight in IST, right?
