So, I'm back at the vet with one of the animals today. They've been taking EMV cards since 10/1, but admittedly, I'd only handed them a Visa or MC. Today, I handed over my Amex. Clerk inserts it, then removes and mumbles something about "I dunno why Amex cards won't work." The other chimes in that "I don't even bother inserting Amex cards."
Now, if I'm not mistaken, the liability shift for Amex doesn't really happen until the 15th or 16th of October. Could have gotten the date wrong, but I'm sure I've read somewhere that the actual liability shift for Amex is a couple weeks after 10/1. No idea if that has anything to do with it or not. Anyways...being forced to swipe Amex was a new one for me. Though the same thing happened in St. Maarten late last year.
A lot of card machines arnt certified for EMV Amex. Canada, Australia and the U.K. Had the same problem for the first couple of years.
