The key question for accrual is not whether the fare is "light" or not but whether it is in the right booking class. "light" fares can book in a variety of classes, some of which are eligible and others not.
Was that an Alitalia fare Nick and was it a standard ticket? Did you expect it to be a miles-earning fare?
