I suggest you look at the rental car company's web site, and see the car trunk capacity.
Then compare it with another vehicle you are familiar with.
I ran in to the same problem last year: we had 4 adults, and rented an Opel (I think it was a Vectra?).
We had 2 large cases (29"), and a few pieces of hand luggage, and it just made it.
We did not want a station wagon, as we knew we would be leaving the luggage in the car while sightseeing, and did not want it to be visible.
We also planned Milan as our final stop, so we could do shopping there, and not worry about filling the car on the way.
If you are going to Florence and Venice, you can not take the car in to the city, so you want to be able to lock things away securely.
