You can also use them on the longer shorthauls (e.g. LCA) without needing a year's notice, and can be quite useful value for money. Furthermore there are many routes with good availability (ICN, CTU, MAA, BLR, YYC, GRU spring to mind).
Thanks, D actually makes lots of sense for me though I doubt the concept of, if there's reward availability, we go on holiday tomorrow, else we stay at home would be quite popular with the family.
I just have to resign myself to the fact that the routes I fly L/H for holidays are full of business travelers paying a premium fare.
