I went to Torres del Paine as well and you would need to do much more hiking over there including several nights sleeping in a tent. In El Chaltén, however, you can base yourself in one of the many hotels/hostels in town and then just do day trips, making it preferable for someone who is not a "big hiker" in my opinion.
