At ORD, AA has some big scanning machine for checked baggage. We were checking in with a SkyCap and he returned after signing us (non-revs) in. He said "Congratulations, you've been selected by the computer to have your baggage scanned." Supposedly, the profiling computer finds >98% of non-revs to be a threat. He said about 10% of revenue passengers get inspected.

Watch out for the machine, though. It kicks out the baggage into a wall at a pretty fast speed. If they tell you your bags are being scanned (you'll know it because you're present for the scanning), make sure you don't carry breakables in the bag.
