I did try going to the airport and asked the airline to check my passport to see if it would scan, which of course made them suspicious. She took it, I think scanned it, then spent some time looking on her computer. She asked if it got wet, which I answered honestly then she basically read to me what constitutes as a damaged passport from a .gov website. I then asked her if it scanned, and she it doesn't matter if it scans because if it gets wet it's no longer valid. This was at my small local airport as I am 4 hours from an international airport.
