I'm not an expert (hopefully one will be around shortly), but I've been told this as well when trying to change an ex Spain trip. Can they not change your onward connections for you instead? Seems to me agents have more leeway to fiddle with the domestics. In a worst case scenario, you could ask to standby for an earlier flight once you get to the lounge in PHL. AA is generally quite good about that.
