I read his post and felt it is a great idea, but I can't contribute to it because of my usual way of using travel guide books.

I usually tear and strip a travel guide book into pieces and bring only the parts I would need with me. At the hotel I tear off into far little piece and grab only the portion that I may need on the day or two of the travel. And when I feel I've used up enough on the portion I throw it away.

This way I usually end up with totally unused (and left behind in the home) portions and worn-in-the-pocket map portions of guide books after a trip.

Now I'm a little curious if I'm doing usual or quite special among other FTers.

How do you use travel guide books?
Glad to have inpired you! My last trip to Florence (3 days ago) I brought 4 books, read most of them before I left and then took one with me each day based on which I thought would help me the most. Usually I am not such a prolific guide user but I had never been to Italy, knew no Italian and found the city a maze. The Maps were very helpful.
