no, didn't use anything like AARP/USAA. yes, since i don't currently own a car i do rent quite a bit. i have found a carrier that offers non-owners policies that takes care of the liability coverage and insuremyrentalcar.com can be used to cover the actual vehicle.

however, my current issue is how to avoid my license being suspended for an accident i wasn't at fault for... it appears that under CA law, it doesn't matter whether you were at fault. if you weren't insured, you are subject to the mandatory suspension.
