I suppose also some of it depends on your reason for travel.

As a vendor, you basically have to suck it up and do what your client wants, within reason.

For internal travel, it's different. I'd consider it very bad form to organise a Monday morning meeting where you expect people travelling in to attend (likewise Friday afternoon) and would not be shy in pointing this out.
