I was in Beijing about a year ago. I highly recommend the "Peace Hotel", located in the Wangfujing district which is a modern shopping area about a 15 minute walk from Tiananmen Square.It's a modern hotel with a beautiful marble lobby, large rooms with all the ammenities, a very nice courtyard restaurant and piano bar. The service was attentive and efficient. The room rate I paid was $100US per night. They have a website as well at www.peacehotelbeijing.com.
