I never before or since felt so secure on an airplane as the flite I took from Frankfurt to Tel Aviv back in the seventies. My travel companion and I were in our twenties, middle class Americans. We were taken aside by a curly-headed young man and questioned for about half an hour about our trip (round the world, for me about 3 months in length). At one point they asked us to remove our shoes and we stood there for about 15 minutes while the shoes were ??? x-rayed ??? checked ??? I'm quite sure our checked luggage was thoroughly checked by hand also, but we couldn't tell anything had been disturbed when we unpacked. I didn't mind the ordeal one tiny bit, and noted the armored personnel carrier (tank-type vehicle) that escorted our aircraft from the gate through the taxi. If you want to feel secure in the air, just try El Al.
