EL AL requires a three hour advance check in. Not only do they x-ray all of your luggage, they often up it up and go through it garmet by garmet. They want to know why/how/when/where. . . on why you are going on this trip.
60 minutes ran a story several years ago on how sloppy US airport security was. They put a hidden camera in a bag, snuck onto the tarmac and tried to gain access to airplanes on the tarmac. In most cases they went unchallenged into the aircraft. They were stopped by armed EL AL guards about 100 yards from "their plane".
