20 years ago, many frequent flyers were barely computer literate and going online to communicate with "strangers" over a topic of mutual interest was for the rather young ones and the more nerdy types. The ability to generate money on such a small niche market and not be operating a hopeless financial blackhole just wouldn't be there then like it would be a couple of years later when becoming so-called internet millionaires was the expectation of many more.
20 years ago most of my flights' seat mates wouldn't know an Internet browser even if the browser on the computer screen hit them in the face.
