When our company was smaller and I handled all the travel booking (exclusively through DL) I added to our new employee onboarding process that they either provide their Skymiles # or create a Skymiles account (if they didn't have one) sometime during their first week of employment. Then we have it on file and aren't caught in these situations!
The OP is booking a trip for someone who isn't an employee. It's apparently a one-off situation.
