Many Munich hotels are around the central station (Hauptbahnhof). While not the best area of town, it is perfectly safe, and only about ten minutes walk from the central square (Marienplatz). If you choose to stay in this area, you should consider taking the airport bus, especially if carrying luggage. It is somewhat slower, but you get to see more, and the terminal is just across from a row of hotels.
