talko17, I had exactly the same situation as yours before. A few months ago I cancelled a ticket and purchased another one right away (cheaper than changing it because of lowered fuel surcharge). I saw my prior seat reservation was freed immediately as I cancelled my old ticket and I was able to reserve the original seat with new ticket.

I was using two browsers, one for cancellation and one for purchase. So I could reserve it right away.
