A recent poster stated he got more airpoints on the credit card than for the low cost NZ Australia flight paid for by the cc. You will be disappointed trying to get Star Alliance status with Air NZ unless flying in premium cabins
Depends on what your goal is: APD so you can earn/burn, or SP for chasing *A status.

A $200 one way Trans-Tasman deep-discount sale fare would typically get you 1 APD and 9 SP (as an example).
A Platinum level CC will get you APD 2.67 and 1 SP for that same flight (assuming $75/APD and $200/SP)

If your goal is merely towards status then CC still contribute very little (it does help).

With the above example, NZ FFP scheme would get you 0.5% return, CC with get you 1.34% return (keep in mind most cash-back credit card scheme tops out at 2%, but most typically at 1% return).
Either way you won't earn much APD back in return, that's for sure.
