Sammy, here's a tip for using your free day coupon in NYC. Make the reservation on the Avis website, using the AWD# on the certificate. The Avis website requires you to submit the coupon # (different from the AWD#) from the main reservation page *after* you complete the reservation. If you do this, or call the 800#, you'll be told Manhattan locations have reached their limit for those coupons for that day. In 4 years, I've never heard different. But I've never been refused when I presented the coupon at the rental location - I just hand it over with my license and credit card without saying a word. It's worked every time.
