Well, Peter, my vote would have to go to Pohnpei in the Federated States of Micronesia.

Not overrun by tourists, not (yet) over-commercialized.

Go see the ruins at Nan Madol, trek thru the jungle and take a shower under a waterfall, eat Mangrove Crabs. Stay at the American Village...no a/c, but cool breezes and ceiling fans. Don't worry about the mosquito netting over the beds, it's there to keep gecko poop off your bed from the geckos than scurry thru the thatched roofs and eat the insects!

By all means visit the Kapengi Marengi village and get some carved wood fish, turtles, sharks (mouths inset with REAL baby shark teeth), stc. Maybe you'll have meal while the villagers sing to you...they did this when my wife's church group visited the island.

I guess this might fall under more of the adventure travel than usual touristy stuff, but a lot of us have been there and got the T-shirt. This is civilized and safe, but DIFFERENT.

I'd recommend anyone check it out.
