I know virtually all of the F&B staff and management, and have never noticed anything strange about their behavior. Of course this is an hotel in Tokyo, so staff are surely trained to smile at guests, but I suspect you might be reading something into this. Knowing the staff very well, I find it highly unlikely that there is anything unusual about their behavior or intentions.
I did not mean to imply any type of improper behavior or intentions, just that their wide grins and efforts to appear friendly came off as fake and overdone; maybe a kinder comparison would be to the staff at Tokyo Disney, or maybe Japanese trying to act how they think a westerner would act.
I also did not mean to imply that we saw this in ALL of the male staff, although it was definitely more than just one or two.
And of course this was just a subjective impression we had on a short 1-night stay. Maybe on a subsequent stay we would feel different, and certainly others would see it in a different light or think nothing of it.
