AFAIK, seat reservations free up immediately when changed via the web seat selection. If you have some flight that is wide open, give it a try.

If OTOH, you cancel with the reserved seat, I have no idea.

But you could change out of the good seats just before rebooking, then grab them once rebooked. Only a few minutes risk.
