Thanks guys!

So conclusion is
- DL operated flights remain much better odds being top of list
- it's worth considering if I book in W, not if I book in Y (with only 24-34 seats in W it does seem a realistic bet)
- check boarding pass and ask for the right status

DL operated seems to maintain the better option ... tough life.
